  • A Year of Birds: April

By mid-April, the migratory birds are back, and it is a delight to both see them soaring in the air and hear their calls in the trees along the beach.  The other day as some friends and I were hiking, we came upon an amazing sight: a group of 7 cedar waxwings was perched on…

I am pleased to now have my art represented at a third local gallery: Hanni Gallery in Harbor Springs, MI. She currently has nine of my paintings, and I encourage anyone who can to visit this outstanding gallery. There are wonderful hand-crafted items in 3-D as well as paintings.

  • A Year of Birds: March

It is March, and the weather is finally starting to warm up a bit – it even goes into the mid-40’s on a sunny day! The snow is starting to melt, and the landscape is slowly turning from white to brown. Locals are used to the “spring slush” in which back roads turn into muddy,…

  • Migrating Sanderling: acrylic painting

A couple of weeks ago, when walking on the beach, I came across a group of sanderlings migrating south. One was exceptionally cute, and this painting is the result. As usual, I painted this with a limited palette of Tit. white, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, burnt ochre, burnt sienna and a touch of payne’s gray.…

  • Flickers on the Ground (acrylic)

I think flickers are beautiful birds. A couple of months ago, I saw some in the side yard, busily eating ants (these woodpeckers like ants from any source, including an anthill!) This was painted in acrylic with a limited palette: titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber, yellow ochre and sap green.

  • Sandhill Cranes: Oil Painting

A few weeks ago, I saw some sandhill cranes feeding in the evening light at Misery Bay. I took a bunch of photos, and decided to take a more impressionistic approach to these beautiful birds. I used a limited palette for this oil painting: tit. white; ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, Burnt Umber, burnt sienna, yellow…

  • Mute Swans on the River

I love the beauty of swans, and when I saw these two on a nearby river, I couldn’t resist painting them. I hope you enjoy their elegant grace as much as I do! As usual, my palette was limited: titanium white, burnt umber, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue and cerulean blue. The swans can be seen…

  • Dressed in the Flag: Prophetic Art

I realize that our nation is going through a difficult time, which is why this dream about God’s purpose was so encouraging. My prayer is that it will also encourage you. In this dream, I was in a room that was filled with dressmaker dummies wearing dresses made of American flags from various times in…

  • Commission of Beach and flowers

I recently completed a commission in which the client requested bright colors and a scene depicting the beach, the lake and flowers. I chose the scene from near a friend’s house and added Indian Paintbrush, which actually grows not far from the beach up here in Michigan. I added real sand and glitter to the…

  • Female Cardinal: acrylic and oil painting

I love cardinals, and chose to paint a female that I had photographed in early spring in a setting of flowers for fun.

  • Kildeer on Lake Huron Beach

I enjoy painting Kildeer; they are one of my favorite shore birds. This one hangs out on a small rocky point on Lake Huron in North Michigan. I went with a limited palette for this one: burnt umber, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre and titanium white.

  • The Picnic Tables: Prophetic Art

Last week, I had another dream, which the picture above (in pencil) illustrates. In this dream, I was at the top of a large, grassy hill that led to a field below. Jesus took me by the hand, and we began running down, faster and faster. As we ran, He and I took the hand…
